Lake Mead Kayaking: Rent a Kayak or Take a Guided Trip?

A dockside kayak rental and a guided Boulder Islands trip offer two ways onto Lake Mead. The right choice depends on your experience and how long you want to paddle.

A kayak rental at Lake Mead Marina and a guided trip to the Boulder Islands can put you on the same lake, but they ask different things of you. If you already paddle, a short rental gives you more freedom. For a first outing, choose a guide who can teach you and lead the route.

  • Lake Mead Marina rents kayaks from its dock, so you do not need to transport a boat.
  • Desert Adventures offers a guided Lake Mead trip with a self-drive option for visitors staying in Boulder City.
  • Emerald Cave trips use the Colorado River below Hoover Dam, rather than Lake Mead above it.

Should you rent a kayak or book a guided Lake Mead trip?

Choose a marina rental if you are comfortable paddling independently and want a shorter outing. Choose a guided Lake Mead trip if you want instruction and someone else leading the route. For a beginner visiting Boulder City, we recommend the guided option, even though the rental has a lower starting price.

At Lake Mead Marina, kayaks launch from the dock. There is no boat to tie onto your car or trailer to reverse down a ramp. Rentals are limited to the south side of the Boulder Islands through Promontory Point, so the outing stays within the marina’s designated area.

The rental conditions require participants to be able to swim and wear life jackets throughout the outing. Wind can change the experience considerably. Before leaving town, check Lake Mead’s current conditions.

How do the rental and guided-trip costs compare?

Lake Mead Marina lists a kayak for one or two people at $25 per hour or $65 for four hours, plus a $100 security deposit. Desert Adventures lists its self-drive guided Lake Mead trip at $154 per person plus entrance and fees. The rental charge is per kayak; the tour charge is per person.

That difference matters when you compare booking pages. The marina has a one-hour minimum, and the person signing the rental agreement must be at least 18. A rental buys time with the equipment; you are responsible for your route within the allowed area.

The Desert Adventures Lake Mead tour lasts about four and a half hours. Its self-drive package includes a guide, basic paddling instruction, kayak equipment, a dry bag, lunch and water. It includes in-park transfers but not hotel transportation. The minimum age is six, and the trip’s difficulty ranges from easy to moderate depending on wind.

For visitors already sleeping in Boulder City, the self-drive option avoids paying for a Las Vegas hotel pickup they do not need. Follow the operator’s meeting instructions when booking.

Is Emerald Cave part of a Lake Mead kayaking trip?

Emerald Cave is on the Colorado River below Hoover Dam, reached from the Willow Beach area on Lake Mohave. A Lake Mead marina rental explores the reservoir above the dam instead. Choose the launch location before booking: a Lake Mead paddle and an Emerald Cave outing are different trips.

The National Park Service paddling guide explains both areas. It also identifies Canoe/Kayak Beach in Hemenway Harbor for people bringing their own boats. Launching directly below Hoover Dam requires an authorized outfitter and a permit; paddling upriver from Willow Beach does not provide a view of the dam.

If you want the Boulder Islands, look for a Lake Mead itinerary. If you want Emerald Cave, look for a Willow Beach itinerary. That distinction is more useful than choosing by a Las Vegas pickup label.

Where can you get supplies or eat after paddling?

Pick up picnic groceries at Albertsons in Boulder City before heading to the lake, or choose a meal at The Boat House at Lake Mead Marina afterward. A guided trip that includes lunch needs less food preparation than a self-guided rental.

The Boat House has a covered patio at the marina. The marina amenities page also lists picnic supplies in its store. For more time in town after the lake, see our Boulder City things-to-do guide.

Confirm the current rate, meeting point and weather policy with your operator before booking. Pick the outing that suits your paddling experience, then leave enough time to enjoy your meal without rushing back to return a boat.
